PHILOSOPHY STATEMENTS

The Early Years at Elm Creek School

In Kindergarten through grade 4 at Elm Creek School, students are provided with a solid foundation in literacy and numeracy.  The latest in early years’ research is utilized to provide students with opportunities to build reading, writing, numeracy and technology core skills.  Students are guided to become independent learners and critical thinkers in an environment of encouragement and challenge.  Early years students are taught social skills, integrating concepts throughout curricula.

The Middle Years at Elm Creek School

Grades 5 through 8 are years of significant transition in students’ lives, both developmentally and academically.  Students at Elm Creek School are encouraged to explore the eight different learning styles and develop their own sets of interests and abilities.  Staff members continue to guide students in their journey to become independent learners and critical thinkers while utilizing a middle years’ philosophy focusing on intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development.  This philosophy incorporates the concepts of integration of curricula, exploration of ideas, utilization of technology, differentiation in instruction, and socialization.

The Senior Years at Elm Creek School

Grades 9 through 12 provide students with the opportunity to earn credits towards graduation in Manitoba while preparing them for a career or for college or university entrance.  Staff members at ECS strive to provide our students with a well-rounded education, promoting balance in physical, emotional, academic, and social lifestyles.  We encourage students to become involved in co-curricular programs and to take classes in a wide range of subject areas.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

Manitoba Education requires all Manitoba graduates to meet certain compulsory credit requirements, with a minimum of 30 credits earned towards a high school diploma.  Full details of the provincial requirements for graduation may be found at the MB Ed. website:  http://www.edu.gov.mb.ca/k12/policy/grad_require.html

Elm Creek School offers two graduation certificates:

a) Manitoba Education Certificate

    Minimum requirement of 30 credits including the compulsory credits required by Manitoba Education;

b) Elm Creek School Certificate

    In addition to meeting the requirements of Manitoba Education, the student must complete a minimum of 34 credits.

NOTES:

Grade 9 students are fully scheduled with eleven courses.  Grade 10 students are expected to take a minimum of ten courses (including phys.ed.).  Grade 11 students are expected to take a minimum of eight courses (including phys.ed.).  Grade 12 students are expected to take a minimum of six courses (including phys.ed.).

The variety of courses offered during a student's high school years at Elm Creek School may change due to enrollment and demand for courses.  Course and class changes will only be considered for academic reasons.  Note that students who choose either Band or Art programming in their grade 7 year are expected to remain in their chosen program throughout their grade 7 through 10 years.  Students in grade 12 who wish to apply for college or university scholarships need to make themselves aware of requirements individual scholarships may have (course-based requirements, grade requirements, community service etc).
