Alcohol and Other Drug Policy

Positive Expectations:

  1. Have respect for yourself.
     a. Live a healthy substance-free school life.

The purpose of this policy is to create an alcohol and other drug free school environment. The policy will provide support services to students and to the families of students involved detrimentally with alcohol and other drugs. The policy recognizes and is sensitive to the legal rights of all students and in keeping with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The intent of this policy:
-         treats all students equally and fairly
-         treats all incidents in a professional manner
-         reacts in a manner consistent with the purpose of ensuring the well-being of all students

Elm Creek School recognizes that the use of alcohol, illegal drugs and the misuse of prescription drugs are detrimental to students’ well being. Alcohol and other drug use affects students’ mental and physical health and interferes with the academic and extra-curricular interests of students and staff.
Elm Creek School’s position is that alcohol and other drugs, other than those prescribed, are not to be used by, nor be in the possession of individuals during the regular school day, school activities or student-related activities, either on or off school property. Furthermore, no student is to be under the influence of alcohol or other drugs during school programs, activities or events.

*PLEASE NOTE: Any level of use, or possession of alcohol and other drugs is not acceptable and will be considered an infraction of school policy.

Use or possession of alcohol or other drugs

q       A first infraction will result in a three-day suspension. A meeting with parents, administration and the student will take place prior to the student’s return to class. A referral will be made to the AFM Counsellor for an assessment and alcohol and drug education or to the school Social Worker. Consent from parents and the student will be requested at that meeting. If consent for counseling is not received the student will be suspended for a total of five days.
q       A second infraction will result in a five-day suspension and mandatory counseling. If consent for counseling is not received, the student will be required to go before the school board to obtain consent to return to class.
q       A third infraction will result in a recommendation to the board for expulsion. The student will remain suspended until the board reaches its decision regarding expulsion.

Note: Policy infractions listed above as first, second, third refer to the entire time the student is enrolled in Elm Creek School.

Supplying/Selling

Student caught supplying and/or selling alcohol and/or other drugs on school property or at a school activity will be recommended to the board for expulsion. The student will be suspended until a decision regarding expulsion is made by the board. The administration will report the incident to the police.
